John Mauterer, DVM

Dr. John Mauterer graduated from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. He worked in private practice in New Orleans for one year before attaining an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at The Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey. In 1992, Dr. Mauterer completed his residency in Small Animal Surgery at The Ohio State University, where he achieved board certification in small animal surgery and remained on faculty for 2 additional years. Over the next 16 years, Dr. Mauterer worked as a small animal surgical specialist in private practice and co-founded the first multi-specialty 24-hour critical care hospital on the Northshore. Over the past 7 years, he has established the surgical practice at Veterinary Specialists of Greater New Orleans, servicing the New Orleans and surrounding areas, including Slidell, Mandeville, Covington, Houma and Thibodeaux. With 29 years of experience, Dr. Mauterer now is excited to be part of the founding of Capital Area Veterinary Specialists that serves Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, Walker, Hammond, Lafayette, and everywhere in between, with excellence and compassion for clients and their pets.
Julia Coutin, DVM, MS
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Small Animal)
Julia Coutin is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated high school in 2003 from the Academy of the Sacred Heart. She obtained her Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University in 2007, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In 2010, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Coutin continued her education and experience in veterinary medicine by completing a one year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Coutin completed both a small animal surgical residency and Master’s degree program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She achieved Board Certification in 2015 from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Diplomate ACVS-SA). She is thrilled to be co-founder of both Veterinary Specialists of Greater New Orleans and Capital Area Veterinary Specialists in Baton Rouge, and to be home near family and friends.
Chris Lee, DVM, MS
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Small Animal)
Dr. Christopher Lee returned to New Orleans after graduating from the LSU school of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. He then completed a one year, rotating small animal internship followed by a three-year small animal surgical residency at Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine. While completing his residency, Dr. Lee also obtained his master’s degree. He enjoys all aspects of small animal surgery including soft tissue, neurologic and orthopedic surgery with specific interests in surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, oral/maxillofacial surgery, and interventional surgical techniques. He achieved Board-Certification in 2021 through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Lee loves being back in the New Orleans area with his wife, daughter, and their fur animals which include 2 dogs: Phoenix and Leeaux, and 2 cats: Taceaux and Queseaux.
David Cradic, DVM
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Small Animal)
A New Orleans native, Dr. David Cradic graduated from Jesuit High School in 2004 before earning his Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University in 2009. He remained in Baton Rouge to pursue his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2014. Following graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Cradic completed five years of advanced training, including a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at North Houston Veterinary Specialists, a surgical internship at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, and a three-year surgical residency also at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. He became a Board-Certified Small Animal Surgeon in 2022 through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Sara Ramos, DVM
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Dermatology
Dr. Sara Ramos graduated from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. Following graduation she completed a rotating internship at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She then returned to LSU where she pursued advanced training in the field of dermatology completing both a 1-year dermatology internship and a 3-year dermatology residency. She is very passionate about helping pets with skin disease and loves interacting with all her patients and clients.
Kirk Ryan, DVM
Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Dr. Ryan is a board-certified expert and diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He obtained his veterinary degree from Colorado State University and completed residency training at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. He comes to CAVS with over 25 years of veterinary experience including 6 years in veterinary practice and 17 years as a clinical expert and faculty member at Louisiana State University. Dr. Ryan is a past-president of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association and the Southwest Veterinary Symposium. He offers advanced diagnostics and provides experienced treatment for dogs and cats with a variety of medical problems. Advanced diagnostics include abdominal ultrasound and endoscopic procedures of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary systems.
